Record High: Germany Biggest Investor in Taiwan from January to May 2023

In the first five months of 2023, approved investments in Taiwan by German companies have reached a record high of US$ 958.1 million according to the latest statistics released by the Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on June 20, 2023.

The main investments were approved in infrastructure projects, namely electricity and gas supply, which accounted for 92.8 percent of the whole amount (US$ 889.5 million). According to the statistics, other major investment sectors included professional, scientific, and technical services (US$ 33.3 million), information and communication (US$ 15.3 million) as well as manufacturing (US$ 12.1 million). Investments in the manufacturing sector were approved in the categories “electrical equipment manufacturing” and “computers, electronic and optical products manufacturing”.

Germany was the biggest investor in Taiwan by far from January to May, superseding the United States and other major investors such as Great Britain and Japan. Investments from the U.S. accounted for US$ 577.2 million, those from Great Britain and Japan reached US$ 484. million and US$ 413.0 million, respectively. The Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei (AHK Taiwan) Mr. Axel Limberg stated: “The statistics reveal that the German-Taiwanese business relations continue to develop positively. Characterized by high purchasing power, a well-trained workforce, and excellent infrastructure, Taiwan remains an attractive business and investment location for German companies. We believe that the further expansion of the semiconductor sector and the ongoing energy transition will open more business opportunities for German companies.”
